“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly post hosted by Breaking the Spine, that discusses upcoming releases that we are super excited about!

Date of Publication: August 16th, 2016

Goodreads Summary:

Amber Tate believes the worst thing she’ll suffer in life is dealing with the unrequited love she feels for her brother’s best friend, Rylen Fite. She also believes war is something unfortunate that happens places far, far away from her rural Nevada town. She’s wrong on both counts.

When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed—everything from food and water sources to technology and communications are compromised. Without leadership, the nation is split between paralysis and panic, but Amber isn’t one to hide or watch helplessly. She’s determined to put her nursing skills to use, despite the danger, even if it means working alongside the man she can never have.

In this first installment of NY Times bestselling author, Wendy Higgins’s debut New Adult series, a frighteningly realistic apocalyptic America is brought to life, entwined with searing romantic tension that will leave you eager for more.

The Dead of Haggard Hall

Marie Treanor

Genre: Gothic/historical/paranormal romance

Publisher: Samhain Publishing

Date of Publication: 26th July 2016

ISBN: 978-1619235830

ASIN: B01CUOPRZQ

Number of pages: 216 (paperback)

Word Count: 71,000

Cover Artist: Kelly Martin

Book Description:

Spirit possession is easy to remedy. Possession of the heart is another matter.

After vicar’s widow and natural medium Barbara Darke loses her respectable teaching position, she reluctantly agrees to become companion to her former pupil Emily, now the bride of young Sir Arthur Haggard.

Once settled at Haggard Hall, Barbara finds her friend is beset by ghostly voices and unexplained deaths. In a maelstrom of dark spirits and wicked emotions, Barbara battles to lay Emily’s ghosts to rest—both hampered and helped by Arthur’s skeptical cousin Patrick, who provokes and attracts her in equal measure.

It would be a mistake to trust a secretive, guilt-ridden man suspected of driving his wife to suicide, if not outright murdering her. And it could well be lethal to give in to her own desires, confused as they often are with the lusts of the dead.

But Arthur and Emily are in genuine physical danger, and suspicion is falling closer and closer to Patrick—the man who haunts Barbara’s sensual dreams. The man who stands to inherit Haggard Hall.

Warning: Contains a medium whose body is open season for spirit possession, and a scandal-ridden journalist who only believes what he can see—and touch.

Author Interview:

  • Give us the history of you. (family life, where you’re from, etc.)

I’m Marie Treanor. I live on the east coast of Scotland with my husband of twenty-five years, and my three kids, two of whom are grown-up but not yet fled the nest. We have a small, lively dog who keeps us all on our toes, or at least on the end of his lead!

I write paranormal romance, mostly on the steamy side and have more than 40 books so far, New York, small press, and self-published

  • Tell us about your new book in 10 words or less.

Victorian hot Gothic romance. Medium fights evil spirits & sensual temptation. (I’m counting the “&” as a symbol, not a word J )

  • Walk me through the process that you went through to write your new book.

Once I had the characters straight in my head, and the beginning of the story, I sat down and wrote it. Being a bit of a pantster, I had to change bits as I went along, but mostly it flowed pretty well! I did a bit of a final self-edit and sent it to my editor who, fortunately, loved it!

  • How did you come up with your book’s name?

From the name of my hero and his family’s house. Haggard came to me as a great name for a Gothic hero, so I had his family live in an isolated old Gothic mansion called Haggard Hall. And since it’s full of ghosts, and my heroine is a medium, it quickly became The Dead of Haggard Hall

  • What made you decide to write this book?

I’ve always loved the Gothic genre in both books and films. But although this has come through in the Gothic elements of many of my books, I’d never actually set out to write a Gothic romance as such. I itched to write a modern Gothic novel which could fully exploit all the subtle sexual tension of the older books. But when the character of Barbara Darke began to grow in my mind, she was a Victorian, not modern at all! However, I think she’s relateable to modern readers: she accepts her temptations and desires as part of who she is. She is a sensual person and she tells a sensual story J

  • How many characters are based on people you actually know? Do those people know they were the basis for your characters?

No, if I use people I know in this way, they’re generally only part of a character. My characters are usually complicated composites of different people, real and imagined. And no, I doubt they’d ever know. I certainly wouldn’t tell them! Except my husband – he knows there are bits of him in several of my heroes

  • How many publishers did you send your book to before it was picked up?

Just Samhain. But I’ve been with them a long time, and my editor knows my work.

  • What book did you read most recently that you loved, and would recommend to everyone?

I’ve been reading Ashley Gardner’s “Captain Lacey” historical mystery series. The hero is a retired army officer in Regency England, who takes to solving crimes. It’s not really romance – although there is rather charming romance in it – but I love the whole series for the complicated characters and how their story constantly moves on.

  • Any tips for new writers?

Just keep writing! And reading, and learning – I don’t think that part of it is ever over!

  • Have you ever liked the movie more than the book? Be honest (and tell us which one!!)

I don’t think I have! Probably because I usually read the book first.

  • Are there any popular books you know you would never read? (tell us which ones!)

Probably George RR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire books – just because I’m addicted to the tv series and I know it strays.

  • What are you working on now?

I’m planning a novella set in the Darke of Night world, to be released later in the year.

  • Anything else you would like to add?

Just that I hope you like reading The Dead of Haggard Hall as much as I enjoyed writing it! And that it’s first sequel, The Prisoner of Silverwood Castle, comes out in August!

And to say thank you so much for interviewing me – it’s been a pleasure!

Review: The Vanishing Throne

Title: The Vanishing Throne

Author: Elizabeth May

Date of Publication: June 21, 2016

Vanishing Throne_final front cover.pdf

Goodreads Summary:

Everything she loved is gone.

Trapped. Aileana Kameron, the Falconer, disappeared through the fae portal she was trying to close forever. Now she wakes in an alien world of mirrors, magic, and deception—a prisoner of the evil fae Lonnrach, who has a desperate and deadly plan for his new captive.

Tortured. Time after agonizing time Lonnrach steals Aileana’s memories, searching for knowledge to save his world. Just when she’s about to lose all hope, Aileana is rescued by an unexpected ally and returns home, only to confront a terrifying truth. The city of Edinburgh is now an unrecognizable wasteland. And Aileana knows the devastation is all her fault.

Transformed. The few human survivors are living in an underground colony, in an uneasy truce with a remnant of the fae. It is a fragile alliance, but an even greater danger awaits: the human and fae worlds may disappear forever. Only Aileana can save both worlds, but in order to do so she must awaken her latent Falconer powers. And the price of doing so might be her life…

My Review:

The book starts out with Aileanna trapped away from the human realm with a fae named Lonnrach who is holding her prisoner and constantly drinks from her blood with his bites to try and pull information through her memories. He is on a mission to find something that he needs that Aileanna has no idea about.

Aileanna loses herself through the things that Lonnrach does and one of the only things that is keeping her from losing it all are thoughts of Kiaran who is her fae friend and maybe more. Eventually Kiaran’s sister Aithinne rescues her, and they escape and make it back to the human world where they meet up with characters from book one.

At first I wasn’t sure about this book because it was kind of slow at first, but things eventually pick up, and I could not put it down. We are introduced to a new character Aithinne which is Kiaran’s sister, and I absolutely loved her. She has demons of her own from Lonnrach and being trapped with the fae for 2,000 years, but she hides them so well and is funny and someone that I would aspire to be like.

We meet Derrick again who is such a crazy and cute little fairy. I would like to have one of him myself especially with his sewing skills. I didn’t like Gavin as much as I did in book one and maybe it was because he was so hardened after things that had happened from the fae attack.

I could not get enough of Kiaran and his back story. You want to hate him because of the things that he has done but love him because of the individual he has become.  The romance between him and Aileanna was absolutely perfect and did not take away from the story at all.

The last thirty pages get pretty intense, and I have no idea what is going to happen in the next book from that cliffhanger, but I am so ready for it.

Book Blitz: The Carver by: Jacob Devlin

The Carver
Jacob Devlin
Published by: Blaze Publishing
Publication date: July 19th 2016
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Young Adult

THE GIRL IN THE RED HOOD has been looking for her mother for six months, searching from the depths of New York’s subways to the heights of its skyscrapers . . .

THE PRINCE looks like he’s from another time entirely, or maybe he’s just too good at his job at Ye Old Renaissance Faire . . .

THE ACTRESS is lighting up Hollywood Boulevard with her spellbinding and strikingly convincing portrayal of a famous fairy. Her name may be big, but her secrets barely fit in one world . . .

Fifteen-year-old Crescenzo never would have believed his father’s carvings were anything more than “stupid toys.” All he knows is a boring life in an ordinary Virginia suburb, from which his mother and his best friend have been missing for years. When his father disappears next, all Crescenzo has left is his goofy neighbor, Pietro, who believes he’s really Peter Pan and that Crescenzo is the son of Pinocchio. What’s more: Pietro insists that they can find their loved ones by looking to the strange collection of wooden figurines Crescenzo’s father left behind.

With Pietro’s help, Crescenzo sets off on an adventure to unite the real life counterparts to his figurines. It’s enough of a shock that they’re actually real, but the night he meets the Girl in the Red Hood, dark truths burst from the past. Suddenly, Crescenzo is tangled in a nightmare where magic mirrors and evil queens rule, and where everyone he loves is running out of time.

EXCERPT:

“Welcome to Sirenetta’s Diner, gentlemen. You boys ever dined here before?”

Liam cut right to the chase. “Are you Mr. Bellamy?”

The man’s face fell into a tight frown, but Crescenzo assumed by the figurine that the frown was just his natural expression. “I am he. The Lord of the Diner.”

“Violet sent us,” Crescenzo said.

“Mm. You mean Heather, yes?”

“Sure?” Crescenzo was still trying to figure out the rule on what he should be calling the Old World people. He supposed Pietro would forever be Pietro to him and he understood why he needed the new name, but he didn’t feel that somebody like Violet, who wasn’t a part of any story Crescenzo had heard before, needed an alias.

Mr. Bellamy plopped two brunch menus in front of Liam and Crescenzo and poured them each a cup of coffee, to Crescenzo’s dismay. Then the old man leaned over the counter and furrowed his eyebrows. In a tense whisper, he said, “Your presence brings ruin to my happy New World life! Where you go, trouble will surely follow. Now, what can I serve you this morning?”

Eventually, he traded his favorite blue crayon for a black pen, and he never put it down. About Breathe Again:

Breathe Again eBook

From the bestselling author of Songbird comes a story that will make you laugh, cry, and believe in the power of second chances.

Carrie Malone has seen enough heartbreak to last a lifetime.

Her family’s demons gave Carrie the courage to move away from home and leave her past behind. Now a college senior, she stays busy with her classes and her job at the diner. It may sound boring to some, but to Carrie, the very best thing about her new life is that every day is calm and blissfully uneventful.

That all changes the night Josh Bennett walks into her diner.

With his dirty designer suit and mud-caked shoes, Carrie’s not sure what to think about the broken man sitting at her counter. She’s even more confused when he doesn’t touch his coffee . . . and leaves his Rolex watch as a tip.

Josh Bennett has nothing to live for.

Starved for affection and deep in despair, he’s looking for a tender touch. A kind word. A giving heart.

A shattered and broken Josh finds himself standing on a city bridge, looking down into the freezing river that will undoubtedly bring an end to his pain.

He’s prepared to jump.

He’s prepared to die.

He’s not prepared for the pretty waitress who finds him there by the river’s edge.

When two lost souls find each other in the dark of the night, can they give each other a reason to breathe again?

Breathe Again Teaser 12 release day

Exclusive Excerpt:

Cold November air nips at my bare fingers, and I mutter a curse. Leaving my gloves at home isn’t the dumbest thing I’ve done lately, but it’s close.

You should’ve let Tony drive you home.

Pulling my jacket tighter around me, I quicken my pace. It’s just a few blocks between the diner and my apartment, but the cold air makes it feel like miles.

Flurries start to swirl, prompting me to walk a little faster. I’m just making my way across the Hart Street Bridge when something catches my eye.

A man’s standing next to the concrete barrier, looking down into the frigid water below.

I stop.

Without a backwards glance, he places one leg over the edge.

My heart pounds in my chest. “No!”

His head jerks up, and there, under the lights of the city, my eyes lock with the man who left his watch on my counter.

I’m paralyzed.

So is he.

Thank God.

People keep walking. Cars keep moving. But my eyes remain fixed on the man straddling the concrete barrier—the only thing that’s keeping him from plunging into the icy river below us. I don’t know his name. I don’t know why he’s dressed like a beggar, and I certainly don’t know why he left his Rolex on my counter.

But in this moment, none of that matters.

I make sure the street is clear before walking across, keeping my movements slow as I approach him. The last thing I want to do is freak him out. For now, one leg is still on this side of the barrier, giving me hope that maybe he doesn’t really want to die tonight. Needing the support it provides, I hold onto the cold concrete and pray I say the right thing.

“What are you—”

“Leave me alone, Carrie.”

The fact that he’s coherent enough to remember my name gives me even more hope. But his voice . . . it’s raw and tinged with so much sadness that it nearly breaks my heart.

“What are you doing?”

“It’s none of your business. Go away.”

“No.”

His eyes flash with anger.

“Screw you.”

“Don’t jump and maybe I’ll let you.”

It’s a ridiculous thing to say, but I’m desperate. He’d never survive the fall, and I already have enough guilt in my heart to last a lifetime. I don’t need this on my conscience, too.

The man blinks rapidly, as if he’s trying to comprehend what I said.

“Tempting, but trust me. I’m not worth saving.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“Believe it,” he whispers. “Please, Carrie. Just . . . go.”

I shake my head and take a step closer.

Keep him talking.

“I don’t even know your name. You know mine. That’s not fair.”

He looks surprised. “You don’t recognize me?”

“Should I?”

“Wow. That’s . . . refreshing, actually.”

I glance around. Surely someone has noticed us and called the cops by now. But I don’t hear sirens, so I keep talking, hoping the man will come to his senses.

I offer him my hand. “My name is Carrie Malone. What’s yours?”

“Josh Bennett.”

The name sounds vaguely familiar.

“Nice to meet you, Josh. Now, would you please place both legs on this side of the barrier before I have a heart attack?”

Josh looks down into the river.

“Please? Let me call your family.”

It’s the wrong thing to say.

“My family’s dead, which is exactly what I should be. What I want to be.”

Review: Untamed

Title: Untamed

Author: A.G. Howard

Date of Publication: December 15, 2015

Untamed

Goodreads Summary:

A post-Ensnared collection of three stories—available in both print and e-versions.

Alyssa Gardner went down the rabbit hole and took control of her destiny. She survived the battle for Wonderland and the battle for her heart. In this collection of three novellas, join Alyssa and her family as they look back at their memories of Wonderland.

In Six Impossible Things, Alyssa recalls the most precious moments of her life after Ensnared, and the role magic plays in preserving the happiness of those she loves. Alyssa’s mother reminisces about her own time in Wonderland and rescuing the man who would become her husband in The Boy in the Web. And Morpheus delves into Jeb’s memories of the events of Splintered in The Moth in the Mirror, available in print for the first time.

This collection expands upon Ensnared‘s epilogue, and includes some deleted scenes to provide a “director’s cut” glimpse into the past and futures of our favorite Splintered characters.

My Review:

If you haven’t read the Splintered series stop now and go read them. This set of novellas were my absolute favorite of the whole book series!

First in the Boy in the Web we get to be in Alyssa’s mother’s head which I really liked because she was always such an interesting character. In the Moth in the Mirror we get to see Morpheus go inside of Jeb’s  memories from the first book which was really good because it was like we were getting two perspectives at one time.

Last we get Six Impossible Things. Now this is what I was craving for after reading Ensnared. Ensnared had one of the most perfect endings I had ever read, but endings always leave you wanting to still know what happened after.

Being in Alyssa’s head for this one was so miraculous. I loved how she has grown both as a human and as a netherling. I have been a Morpheus fan since day one but seeing her human life with Jeb I get it. To see them living out their human life together completed the human side of her, and it was heartbreaking to see her leave behind that life but to see her open her netherling self up to Wonderland was one of the most beautiful things I have ever read.

Every time there was a Morpheus scene I was literally so excited because everything that comes out of his mouth I love! The labor scenes are my absolute favorite, and it was hilarious with the whole craziness going on. My favorite characters were also back such as Rabid White who was his usual funny and creepy self. I will miss this magical world so much, but thank you A.G. for giving this to us!
