Summary from Goodreads:
Can a beating heart bleed from the shattered pieces?
Her heart cracked when her best friend walked away; it completely shattered when she lost her family in a tragic accident.
Now orphaned at seventeen, Charlotte Peterson is forced to live with her former best friend, Jacob Parker. Charlie, a talented pianist, desperately wants their loving friendship back, but something is holding Jake back. The more she spirals into the darkness of depression, the more she needs him.
Jacob vowed to stay away from her—no matter how much he still loved her. Armed with secrets that would have destroyed both of their families, he chose to end their friendship and walk away, which nearly killed him. As he watches the girl he once knew begin to fade away, however, he realizes that their relationship is more important than the truth he’s hiding.
Now it’s up to Jacob to put the pieces of Charlie’s broken heart back together—even if it means revealing the secrets he so desperately wants to protect her from.
Will Jacob find a way to bring back the carefree, talented girl he once knew, or is it too late for both of them?

From the beginning of the book it begins with an emotional incident with the main character Charlie’s parents and brother dying in a car wreck. From then on out it is an emotional and intense ride reading from Charlie’s perspective. I really fell in love with this character. I felt she was strong throughout everything. Yes she had flaws, but I loved those about her as well.
After her parents death Charlie finds herself living with her parents best friends who have been around her entire life. This also means that she has to live with her ex-best friend who she has been in love with her whole life, but he left her alone and heart broken two years ago.
Jacob is a real piece of work. I hated him, and then liked him, and then hated him, and then liked him and so on. At the beginning of the book he is just so hateful to Charlie which I still don’t understand even after learning why he does the things he does. I just feel like he could have approached things better and have talked to Charlie about everything. These are high school kids though and kids do things that we don’t always agree with.
Once things progress I did fall in love with the romance between Charlie and Jacob, and he makes up for everything. There are twists in this book that actually had me pleasantly surprised and wouldn’t have ever guessed was the secret that Jacob was hiding.
The book kept me wanting to read, and I this is the second book I have read by Rita, and I am really starting to enjoy the way she writes. I would definitely read another book by her.
