Goodreads Summary:

He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.

Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.

His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.

Until a human kills her…

Sixteen year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx invade, annihilating entire cities, taking control of the Earth. Isolated in the wilderness, Raven and her friends have only a fragment of instruction from the human resistance.

Shelter in place.

Which seems like good advice at first. Stay put. Await rescue. Raven doesn’t like feeling helpless but what choice does she have?

Then a Nahx kills her boyfriend.

Thrown together in a violent, unfamiliar world, Eighth and Raven should feel only hate and fear. But when Raven is injured, and Eighth deserts his unit, their survival comes to depend on trusting each other…

My Review:

I really liked this one! The pace is slow and steady, but I thought it flowed really well. It also has two perspectives between a human named Raven and an Alien named Eighth, and the dynamic worked awesomely!

Raven felt like a real teen to me, and she did things that teens to do whether they are right or wrong. Eighth was a little emo for an alien, but it made sense the way that he was and all he had suffered. I thought the bond between them was great. Sometimes it was violent and sometimes it was sweet, but with aliens taking down humanity, it couldn’t be all flowery. I’m sure there will be some complaints about this, but it’s fiction!

The one thing out of everything that I was like noooooooo was this line… “That’s a lot of chocolate and marshmallows. Diabetes might be another way to die.” Only because sugar does not give you diabetes!

There was some cool action scenes with the aliens, but the book was more about survival and forming a bond that you didn’t know could happen when there is a war going on between two races. I loved this one, and I can’t wait for book 2!

      • Me too! It sounds interesting, and it was one of the books I picked up at BookExpo. I’m trying to read through all of the ARCs so I can clear up some of my boyfriend’s bookshelves that I am now occupying.

      • My boyfriend cleared off two whole shelves in his apartment for me and I promptly filled them with many books. The intent being that after I read them I will take them back to my mom’s and then fill in the blank space with more TBR books. Well now he’s talking about rearranging what we have on his shelves again so that he can free up a third shelf for me to put books on. I feel so spoiled that he is giving me so much space to display all these books. We already put up another bookcase to put all my board games and some of my DVDs on.

      • It is very sweet. I think he feels bad that he doesn’t have enough space for me to bring my 3000+ book library to the apartment so he’s giving me as much space as he can.

  1. Holy sugar rush!!! I need to read this one!!! Great review, and I love the gif!! Now I just have to wait until the end of August for it to come out☹️ Heh heh….you know I’ll never say August again without my mind wandering to the Glass Vault. Anyway, it’s a good thing I’ve got lots to read until then. I’m reading an arc that I don’t even remember signing up for!! I’m losing it. It’s through the author, not Lola or anything. Actually I’m just starting it, so hopefully it’s as good as it sounds!!!🤞

      • Yes, in fact I have a few from NetGalley that I have had for a while that I need to read. Do they get annoyed if you take too long or anything? I need to catch up before I take on anymore…except for anything from you and Siobhan…everything else comes to a halt if I get anything from either one of you. 😂😂😂

      • Lol yay!!! I have no idea! I only request a few at a time because this one reader I know requested a lot and then got approved for a lot! My problem is you never know when you are going to get approved or rejected so it’s hard to work around their schedule! 😂😂

      • I have 3 full books and 2 sample books (which I didn’t know were sample books when I requested them). I haven’t had any rejections yet, but maybe it’s because of the books I’ve requested. I need to get them read and reviewed or they won’t approve anymore. 😱😂
