Review: All the Stars and Teeth

Title: All the Stars and Teeth

Author: Adalyn Grace

Date of Publication: February 4th, 2019

Goodreads Summary:

She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.

My review:

I love pirates, but have been let down with a lot of the pirate-type books! However, here is one that totally changed my mind! I’ll also add that the cover is one of my favorites of the year!

Amora was pretty freaking awesome! I easily connected with her and what she was going through and had to face! Then there were the boys! I loved Bastian and Ferrick, especially Bastion, though! And Vataea has my heart! She was vicious and lovable at the same time! The bond between the crew was one that I would want to truly be a part of.

All I want in my life right now is to set sail on Keel Haul—that’s the ship, by the way! The author put a whole unique spin on the pirate life with wonderful and vivid descriptions that had me captivated from one. Now, give me all the bones and all the magic, and I’m seriously excited for book 2!

Braxton’s Fall Festival: Day 25 – Playlist

Day 25 (1)

First, I loved this book and I love this series! Definitely check it out if you haven’t!

Haunted House Ghost Playlist:

See below what the author, James “Jay,” and his character, Kellan, have to say about the list!

#1  “Monster Mash” – Bobby Pickett

Jay: I definitely remember dancing to this as a kid at a middle school Halloween event. It kind of makes me think about doing the Thriller dance too. I used to bust some good moves, but those days are in the dust. I have enough energy to workout and chase the dog around. Dancing just ain’t possible these days.
Kellan: Emma has this on repeat all the time! My seven-year-old daughter loves Halloween and jumping out of closets to scare me. Last time she put this on, even Baxter went hiding under her bed. I think the chorus in the background gives him the willies!

#2 “Miracle” – Chvrches

Jay: This is a totally new song to me, but I really like it. Thanks for introducing me. The background sounds are a bit chilling.
Kellan: Oh, this was a crusher. When Francesca showed up on my doorstep last spring, I’d just heard this song for the first time. I couldn’t believe she was still alive after so many years. That was the miracle, but what’s happened to us in the last six months is even more incredible. My heart sometimes still skips a beat when I think about our painful past. But it’s beginning to heal, thanks to what’s occurring between… well, maybe I shouldn’t talk about that quite yet.

#3 “Alligator” – Of Monsters and Men

Jay: I’ve heard this one before but only a few times. It’s got a solid beat, but the throwback to my childhood and teenage years is pretty cool. I used to have a pet alligator.
Kellan: This was playing when we wrapped up the first season of Dark Reality, my television show. My former boss loved the music and played their tracks a lot. I wonder if Emma will like the same kind of music in the future…

#4 “Cloudbusting” – Kate Bush

Jay: Good artist. I haven’t listened enough but will play a few more this month to see if I connect.
Kellan: My sister Eleanor is a big fan. She’d torture with me all this new stuff while I was still living in LA, even leaving messages on my voice mail so when I’d get out of a taping session, I had more things to listen to. Don’t siblings drive you nuts?

#5 “Still Breathing” – Green Day

Jay: For some reason, Green Day has never clicked for me. I like them, but I didn’t actively purchase their albums or download their latest songs. Maybe I should give it a chance again now.
Kellan: Exactly how I feel every single time I find another dead body. “At least it wasn’t me this time” is what goes through my head, but then I feel sad and shock for the loss.

#6 “It’s My Life” – Bon Jovi

Jay: Loved him in the 90s… but after college, I strayed away for some reason. Still a good song, and I can’t deny the power behind the lyrics.
Kellan: Yep… I played it at home all the time to teach my brother a lesson. He’d start fights and when he wouldn’t leave me alone, I blasted the music to tone him out.

#7 “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” – U2

Jay: Classic. Timeless. We all feel this way sometimes.
Kellan:  Classic. Timeless. We all feel this way sometimes. Is there any other response?

#8 “Kisses” – Pales Waves

Jay: You’ve challenged me – I hadn’t even heard of this one, so I just listened to it.The video is awesome, love the warehouse setting.
Kellan: Something about her hair does it for me every time. Maggie used to have hair like she did. I call it the zombie phase, but she was adorable. Her style is much simpler now.

#9 “I Want To Break Free” – Queen

Jay: Oh! I recently watched the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. I truly should’ve been born a generation earlier because I would have had the best time with their music. I still can’t believe it all ended, but the music lives on. Always.
Kellan: Brings back my days in the clubs when I first moved to LA. College kids do the strangest things when they have a few drinks. I was getting my Master’s but still found a little time to break free.

#10 “Werewolves Of London” – Warren Zevon

Jay: Perfect for the Fall Festival. I totally should’ve included a werewolf in the story, but I’d probably have to stretch the books into the fantasy genre, huh? Next time!
Kellan: Great intro with just the music and no words. Even the howling is cool. Now I have a craving for Chinese food too. Thanks!

Review: Blood and Salt

Title: Blood and Salt

Author: Kim Liggett

Date of Publication: September 22nd, 2015

3728FA0A-3216-4C13-B748-656302DC91CD

Goodreads Summary:

“When you fall in love, you will carve out your heart and throw it into the deepest ocean. You will be all in—blood and salt.”

These are the last words Ash Larkin hears before her mother returns to the spiritual commune she escaped long ago. But when Ash follows her to Quivira, Kansas, something sinister and ancient waits among the rustling cornstalks of this village lost to time.

Ash is plagued by memories of her ancestor, Katia, which harken back to the town’s history of unrequited love and murder, alchemy and immortality. Charming traditions soon give way to a string of gruesome deaths, and Ash feels drawn to Dane, a forbidden boy with secrets of his own.

As the community prepares for a ceremony five hundred years in the making, Ash must fight not only to save her mother, but herself—and discover the truth about Quivira before it’s too late. Before she’s all in—blood and salt.

My Review:

When I saw that this was Children of the Corn meets Romeo and Juliet, of course I was full on board for this one!

I really liked the MC, Ash, she was relatable, felt like a real teen, and she was loyal. She kept secrets that were necessary, and her twin brother was seriously awesome!

Also, Dane was great! I would have loved to have been inside his head! The love stuff came a little too fast, but it didn’t affect my love for the story.

And! The corn and cult stuff was super cool, weird, and haunting! This story grabbed me from the beginning and didn’t let go until the very end! Can’t wait to read book 2!

Length: 384 Pages

Book one of NOLA Knights, the heart-stoppingly sexy spin-off series by Men of Haven author Rhenna Morgan

His world. His rules. Her love.

Though his methods may be rough, when it comes to protecting what’s his, Russian vor Sergei Petrovyh’s heart is always in the right place. That’s never been more true than when the gorgeous Evette Labadie asks him for a job. He knows enough to keep his hands off someone as beloved by the locals as Evie, but there’s something about her that calls to him—no matter how badly he burns to make her his.

Don’t think Evie hasn’t noticed the powerful Russian mafia boss who makes her favorite diner a regular stop. How can she not? He’s as hot as his reputation is dangerous. But everyone in her struggling New Orleans neighborhood knows he’s the man to turn to. And right now she needs money to get her son out of trouble.

Her other needs—needs she knows damn well Sergei can more than satisfy—will have to wait.

Evie soon finds herself playing Cinderella to a man who, despite what people believe, is definitely more prince than villain. She can’t help falling deeper in love with each passing day. But when a turf war between Sergei and a rival brings violence to her doorstep, Evie must come to grips with loving a man who will do anything to defend her…or walk away from her best chance at a happily-ever-after of her very own.

Excerpt

Evette pinched the business-size check from her former employer a little tighter and glared at the cleaning company’s logo in the top corner. On any other Friday, the money would have meant inching closer to some semblance of security for her and her son, Emerson. A step toward unraveling the mess she’d created for her life. Today, the unexpected termination that had come with her weekly pay felt more like a sucker punch to the gut. Yet another obstacle to overcome after too many damned years running the gauntlet and never even glimpsing the finish line.

Maybe she could get a job cleaning at one of the hotels. God knew the French Quarter was packed with them, and she was pretty sure she could count on regular shift work, like the office cleaning crew she’d been on. Though, how she was going to land one by Monday when it was already close to 4:30 on a Friday afternoon was beyond her. And landing something quick was the only way this latest setback wouldn’t force her into dipping into Emerson’s school fund. Plus, there was the hurdle of what would happen if they called her old company for references and found out she’d been fired for a security breach.

Not. Good.

The commuter bus swung onto Tulane headed toward Mid-City, and Evie’s spirits sunk a little lower. If someone had told her when she was growing up that she’d be a single mom living in one of New Orleans’s rougher parts of town at twenty-eight years old, she’d have laughed in their face. She was going to be a fashion retail buyer—or at least have some kind of career in fashion. She was going to travel the world. See things. Know people. Adventure her way through life and suck it dry.

Then her mom had died, and she’d gone off the rails.

She sighed and slunk a little farther down onto the hard plastic bench, the run-down stores, bars and restaurants along the roadside passing in a blur while the vibrations from the bus’s engine rattled clear to her bones.

Get knocked down seven times, stand up eight.

If she had a dollar for all the times her momma had said it and all the times Evie had echoed it in the last eight years, she’d be driving a Porsche toward the Garden District right now instead of a barely livable apartment.

But her momma had made it.

Mostly.

Raised Evette through her tumultuous preteen years after her daddy’s death and made it look easy. It hadn’t been until a year after Emerson had been born and Evie had found the courage to read some of her mother’s journals that she’d realized just how much of a challenge her mother had really faced. How much she’d given up and how alone she’d felt through every second.

Evie understood it now. Knew to her very marrow the sacrifices that had been made on her behalf.

And she’d thrown it all away nursing her grief.

Resolve and a whole lot of stubbornness revved her energy and forced her taller in her seat. Pity was what had gotten her into this mess to begin with, and she’d be damned if she went that route again. Labadie women didn’t quit. Didn’t give up. They faced whatever they needed to face, and they smiled doing it. Eventually, she was going to find a way to give her and Emerson the world. She just might have to scrimp a little longer and get more creative to make it happen.

Title: Tempt

Author: Natalia Jaster

Date of Publication: October 17th, 2019

12C21F22-E957-4AA7-BC6F-FC040AC50F6D

Goodreads Summary:

Long ago, she loved a hero—until he became a villain.

Wonder is a wildflower goddess who knows about the magic of picking a blossom—but even more about the consequences.

She’d thought her history buried and forgotten. She’d thought she would never see him again.

She was wrong.

Now, on the brink of an immortal battle between rebel deities and celestial rulers,

Wonder must find a way to defeat her enemies. The key lays deep inside a magic, subterranean library filled with twisting corridors, forbidden books, and secret legends.

Yet trespassing through a deadly forest and breaking into an ancient library isn’t the problem.

The problem is she’ll have company: the devilish god from her past.

And he’s got his own agenda with her.

My Review:

I love this series! And I think this may be my favorite it in so far! Malice, Malice, Malice. He was such an interesting character. He was one to say whatever was on his mind, be it good or bad! And a lot of naughty things came from that Malicious tongue! Loved him!

Wonder has always been a strong side character, and she was even more so with having her point of view this time around. We get to really crack into her backstory and find out what makes her tick.

The swoon was glorious! That is the best word to describe it because Jaster writes the best romance scenes in the world! They are just so emotionally, explicitly perfect! Really, really loved this one! Now, I can’t wait to see how Envy and Sadness’s story will play out next!

Title: Rebel

Author: Marie Lu

Date of Publication: October 1st, 2019

E9937DBB-3173-4B6A-B4D3-9AD63DD41259

Goodreads Summary:

With unmatched suspense and her signature cinematic storytelling, #1 New York Times–bestselling author Marie Lu plunges readers back into the unforgettable world of Legend for a truly grand finale.

Eden Wing has been living in his brother’s shadow for years. Even though he’s a top student at his academy in Ross City, Antarctica, and a brilliant inventor, most people know him only as Daniel Wing’s little brother.

A decade ago, Daniel was known as Day, the boy from the streets who led a revolution that saved the Republic of America. But Day is no longer the same young man who was once a national hero. These days he’d rather hide out from the world and leave his past behind. All that matters to him now is keeping Eden safe―even if that also means giving up June, the great love of Daniel’s life.

As the two brothers struggle to accept who they’ve each become since their time in the Republic, a new danger creeps into the distance that’s grown between them. Eden soon finds himself drawn so far into Ross City’s dark side, even his legendary brother can’t save him. At least not on his own . . .

My Review:

This book was like a freaking gift! I loved how the Legend series ended, but I always wanted more, needed more, and I finally freaking got it!

This one has perspectives from my boy, Daniel AKA Day, and his little bro, Eden. Eden was so young in the last one and I loved his character, so it was awesome to see how he turned out. He isn’t like Daniel in a lot of ways, but he’s brave like him! And he’s so smart, too!

I will say that the highlights for me were when June and Daniel were together! Seriously, I needed those moments in my life! There was swoon, there was action-packed stuff, brotherly love. Also, the addition of Pressa was awesome! She and Eden made such a great team. Thank you, Marie Lu, for making my heart grow while reading this story!
