Review: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Title: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Author: April Genevieve Tucholke

Date of Publication: August 15th, 2013

Goodreads Summary:

You stop fearing the devil when you’re holding his hand…

Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town… until River West comes along. River rents the guest house behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard.

Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more?

Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery… who makes you want to kiss back.

Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.

My Review:

Oh my word! I loved this book! Loved he weirdness and the grayness of it all! And the words were almost magical!

Violet was a great character and she made some very odd choices! Ones that made me smile and one that me go, what are you doing???? Also, the side characters were a hoot!

And River, my boy, you little liar you! Even with all his lies and shenanigans he was such a little precious baby. I wanted to pat the top of his head and tell him to calm the heck down and then give him a hug!

I seriously loved how different and interesting this book was, and I’m already pumped for book 2 to see what kind of games shall be played!

Excerpt

Seven years of this. Tavarra closed her eyes and gripped the chains around the tree that bound her wrists together. She howled with urgency, screamed, and bared her fangs. As she stared up at the twin moons in the darkening sky, she knew her fate was coming. A fire spread throughout her entire body with a wicked touch, and she shook violently.

“The chains will hold this time,” her friend Eza said, landing on Tavarra’s shoulder. If Tavarra killed the pesky bat, there would be nothing, no one, and she had grown to love Eza after all these years.

“Get out of here, Eza! Now!” Tavarra screamed.

“I’ll be right here,” the bat murmured and flew up into the tree above. Eza looked incredibly similar to a fairy except for the thin blackened wings, fangs, and sharper-pointed ears. She was a little taller than the size of Tavarra’s hand from wrist to the tip of the claw on her middle finger.

Tavarra was trying to fight the change. She would win this time. As she breathed in the scents of Laith, Tavarra knew it was a lie, and indeed, she knew she’d failed when her skin began to stretch. She could feel her face taking on a new shape, and that was when the terror came because the night would be unknown to her. That was what haunted her the most. Tavarra held back the tears, unwilling to break, unwilling to bend and show weakness.

All that remained in her soul, heart, and existence, was hunger. She yearned and thirsted for blood, meat, and bones.

Review: The Grace Year

Title: The Grace Year

Author: Kim Liggett

Date of Publication: October 8th, 2019

97355A5C-BCC7-42F1-9218-D75ED33CE80A

Goodreads Summary:

SURVIVE THE YEAR.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

My review:

I’m just loving each book I read by Kim Liggett! This one was so good and different from the ones I’ve previously read! It has a slow start but not in a bad way at all! We get to learn about the characters and this unique and terrifying world!

Tierney was a strong and defiant character and I loved her! I did get mad at her a couple times just because she was angry at Michael, but I get it! What I also thought was cool is we get to see each season play out when the group of girls have to go out on this journey! And this is not a fun one at that! Nothing is as it seems, I might add! Twists and turns galore!

I wanted to hug some characters, shake some, keep some! The writing was flawless and I swear, this woman is an auto buy for me! I highly recommend this savage and beautiful tale!

Review: Wink Poppy Midnight

Title: Wink Poppy Midnight

Author: April Genevieve Tucholke

Date of Publication: March 22nd, 2016

6596DAE2-D2E3-4B73-8700-681316E90639

Goodreads Summary:

Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

My Review:

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting going into this one, but what I did know is that I seriously loved the cover! And after reading, I seriously loved this book!!

I adored the writing. It was so cool and fast paced and the book length was perfect! I’ve been getting bogged down by too-long books so this was a breath of fresh air.

And I loved the characters! Can I not say the word love enough? I’m not sure who I was supposed to hate, but Wink, Poppy, and Midnight were all my little babies. Especially Midnight, he was adorable and needed me there to tell him to stand up for himself at times! Poppy was a bit on the crazy side and Wink had an awesome story-telling side!

Overall, this was a unique book with some awesomely dark aspects and wonderfully poetic words! Can’t wait to read more by this author!
