Goodreads Summary:

It’s time for war.

After suffering terrible losses, Henrietta and Lord Blackwood have led their warriors to Sorrow-Fell, a vast estate where only those invited by a Blackwood may enter–and the ideal place to plan a final assault against the Ancients.

It’s time for a wedding.

Henrietta nervously awaits her marriage to Blackwood, but when the ritual to become his bride reveals a dark secret, she realizes that Sorrow-Fell is not a safe haven; it’s a trap. Convincing the sorcerers of this, however, is not easy. So with Maria, the true chosen one, and Magnus, the young man who once stole her heart, at her side, Henrietta plots a dangerous journey straight into the enemy’s lair. Some will live. Some will die. All will be tested.

In this stunning conclusion to the Kingdom on Fire series, Henrietta must choose between the love from her past, the love from her present, and a love that could define her future. While battles rage, the fate of the kingdom rests on her decision: Will she fall or rise up to become the woman who saves the realm?

It’s time for Henrietta to make her stand.

My Review:

First off, I’m going to say this was a five star read even though what I have to say may not feel like it is! To start, anything that involve fire power, give it to me!

What I love about these books is the world—it has some pretty awesome and dark descriptions! I also love the historical type setting, even though it is a fantasy world. Also, I absolutely love Magnus! When I read book one, I probably wouldn’t have said that, but since book two, my mind has been changed. Who would have thought?

Let’s get to the nitty gritty—geez, Henrietta has been one character I’ve wanted to shake all along. The chemistry between her and Blackwood got real weird in book two and even worse here. Still not sure about the Rook situation either—she was all about putting him first before, but then barely thought of him in this book.

Cluess, though, has a way of keeping you immersed in the story and it’s addicting words. Like I said above, her descriptions are fantastic. Besides wanting to strangle Henrietta a few times, I enjoyed this book much more than book two and felt it was on the same level as the first one! And that ending was perfection!

If you had the power of fire, what would you do with it?

Review: A Poison Dark and Drowning

Title: A Poison Dark and Drowning

Author: Jessica Cluess

Date of Publication: September 19th, 2017

Goodreads Summary:

Henrietta doesn’t need a prophecy to know that she’s in danger. She came to London to be named the chosen one, the first female sorcerer in centuries, the one who would defeat the Ancients. Instead, she discovered a city ruled by secrets. And the biggest secret of all: Henrietta is not the chosen one.

Still, she must play the role in order to keep herself and Rook, her best friend and childhood love, safe. But can she truly save him? The poison in Rook’s system is transforming him into something monstrous as he begins to master dark powers of his own. So when Henrietta finds a clue to the Ancients’ past that could turn the tide of the war, she persuades Blackwood, the mysterious Earl of Sorrow-Fell, to travel up the coast to seek out strange new weapons. And Magnus, the brave, reckless flirt who wants to win back her favor, is assigned to their mission. Together, they will face monsters, meet powerful new allies, and uncover the most devastating weapon of all: the truth.

My Review:

A Shadow Bright and Burning was one of my favorite books last year! So, I was beyond pumped when I got an ARC for this book. It wasn’t as great as the first, but I did really like this one, though!

Let’s talk about my issues. Henrietta was way too fickle over too many pickles. You may already know I am barely tolerant on love triangles unless they are done right, and we have officially hit love square territory. Henrietta claims to love Rook, which I might add he is in the background again! How, I’m supposed to love a character if he is barely there? Then! Anytime Magnus or Blackwood are in the room, Rook is forgotten. Not to mention I hateeeeeeee when characters lie throughout the whole book to characters who they “claim” to trust! Get on the ball, Henrietta!

Now, the stuff I lovedddddddddd! I love this world! The creatures are grotesquely described, and I sucked all that imagination in! Cluess excels at her writing and this magnificent world. I grew very fond of Magnus in this book, and I think he is starting to become my favorite. We also meet a new character, Maria, who is all sorts of awesomeness!

The fight scenes were great, and it makes me want my own staff! There are some twists and some of them I did see coming, but there was one I did not! I can’t wait for the next book, and please let’s get it so there is just one boy!

Review: A Shadow Bright And Burning

Title: A Shadow Bright and Burning

Author: Jessica Cluess

Date of Publication: September 20th, 2016

Goodreads Summary:

I am Henrietta Howel.
The first female sorcerer in hundreds of years.
The prophesied one.
Or am I?

Henrietta Howel can burst into flames.
Forced to reveal her power to save a friend, she’s shocked when instead of being executed, she’s invited to train as one of Her Majesty’s royal sorcerers.

Thrust into the glamour of Victorian London, Henrietta is declared the chosen one, the girl who will defeat the Ancients, bloodthirsty demons terrorizing humanity. She also meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, handsome young men eager to test her power and her heart. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her.

But Henrietta Howel is not the chosen one.
As she plays a dangerous game of deception, she discovers that the sorcerers have their own secrets to protect. With battle looming, what does it mean to not be the one? And how much will she risk to save the city—and the one she loves?

My Review:

As soon as Henrietta uses her power to save her friend, a sorcerer named Agrippa identifies her as the chosen one. She then comes to train with a group of sorcerer boys, and along the way she learns who she really is and will have to help try and save everyone.

I will admit it took me a few chapters to get into this book, but once I did it was unputadownable! It was like Pride and Prejudice meets Harry Potter! The sorcerers get their own Stave. This book had me at stave *dreamy eyes*!

Henrietta was a character that I think people can relate too. She discovers things and then doesn’t always tell the truth which I usually hate, but it is so understandable here. Nettie will do anything to protect her best friend Rook who is fighting demons of his own. She meets a crazy magician on the way where she discovers things about herself that she just wants to push away, but then she does everything in her power to practice and become the sorcerer that everyone wants her to be.

The monsters throughout the book were terrifying, and I loved it!!! The darker the villain is the more I am invested, and these beasts hold back nothing.

There was definitely more action over romance, but the romance that was there has not taken bloom yet, so I really have no idea who the main love interest might be. There is the best friend Rook and the funny Magnus which are the front runners. There is no confirmation from book one, but maybe hopefully Blackwood? He is like Mr. Darcy!

Not many books this year have had me on the edge of my seat, but this one had my fingers anxiously tapping the book and needing to know what was going to happen next. The magician Hargrave who trained Henrietta has a secret that I am going to have an anxiety filled mind until I learn it. Hopefully at the beginning of book 2!!!
