April Reads 2017

This month I have a lot going on since I am going to be releasing a book in May, and am editing another book that I will be releasing this summer. So, my only for sure read at the moment is A Gathering of Shadows by: V.E. Schwab. I loved the first book! I know I am late to the game in this series. I know I will have other ARCs to read, but I am going to be a little more picky this month.

Goodreads Summary:

Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that’s now at war for its independence. The humans of Genesis have fought Earth’s robotic “mech” armies for decades with no end in sight.

After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made. One who should be her enemy. But Abel’s programming forces him to obey Noemi as his commander, which means he has to help her save Genesis–even though her plan to win the war will kill him.

Together they embark on a daring voyage through the galaxy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel’s devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.

My Review:

Defy the Stars begins with action from the get go. Noemi goes to save her best friend and meets up with a mech named Abel. They war off against each other, until Abel says that he is under her command.

Abel has been in solitude for thirty years aboard a deserted ship. He begins the book with thoughts and dialogue that are very robotic which makes sense because he is a mech. He reminded me of Jude Law’s character in A.I. Eventually, as the story progresses, Abel seems to become more human with his thoughts and emotions. He¬†was funny even when he wasn’t trying to be, and I loved that.

Noemi was awesome! She was a strong character and puts everyone ahead of herself. I liked reading from her point of view just as much as I did Abel’s.

I don’t read a lot of sci-fi books, because a lot of the wording gets on my nerves, a lot of it did do that here, but I still enjoyed the story. I can’t wait to see what comes next in the following book.
