Review: Two Thousand Years

Title: Two Thousand Years

Author: M. Dalto

Date of Publication: December 11th, 2018

Goodreads Summary:

Two thousand years ago, the Prophecy of Fire and Light foretold the coming of the Queen Empress who would lead the Empire into a time of peace and tranquility. But instead of the coming of a prosperous world, a forbidden love for the Empress waged a war that ravaged the land, creating a chasm between the factions, raising the death toll of innocent lives until the final, bloody battle.

Centuries later, Alexandra, a twenty-two-year-old barista living in Boston, is taken to an unfamiliar realm of mystery and magic where her life is threatened by Reylor, its banished Lord Steward. She crosses paths with Treyan, the arrogant and seductive Crown Prince of the Empire, and together they discover how their lives, and their love, are so intricately intertwined by a Prophecy set in motion so many years ago.

Alex, now the predestined Queen Empress Alexstrayna, whose arrival was foretold by the Annals of the Empire, controls the fate of her new home as war rages between the Crown Prince and Lord Steward. Either choice could tear her world apart as she attempts to keep the Empire’s torrid history from repeating itself. In a realm where betrayal and revenge will be as crucial to her survival as love and honor, Alex must discover whether it is her choice – or her fate – that determines how she survives the Empire’s rising conflicts.

My Review:

When I first read this blurb, I was like finally an NA book that sounds awesome with a good plot. And let me tell you, the book did live up to the blurb! Plus, yes, plenty of swoon. I mean, swoooooooooooooooooooon!

Dear, Alex—you were pretty badass and also had to put up with some crazy crap! Dear, Treyan—you have my heart! Dear, Reylor—you are a crazy, crazy thing, but I still like you! Does that make me a bad person? The characters were on point! Plus, I got several things that I wasn’t suspecting, and when that happens, that makes me a super happy camper!

The world building was wonderfully done, the writing was addicting, and the overall plot was superb! Oh, and yes, there is a cliffhanger and my heart will be asunder until I read book 2!

people, but she hides a dark secret: because of an accident that happened three years ago, her spirit wanders the
Fade whenever she falls asleep. It’s something she wants to keep hidden from the world, but when she sees someone
watching her in spirit form, she fears the secret’s out. With the demons and fairies that wander the Fade, Brenna has
enough to worry about. Now that she’s in college, it’s schoolwork, new friends, new enemies, and something under
the surface happening at Nephesburg College. Only time will tell if she will survive her first year…

My Review:

First, finally a NA book that isn’t revolved around men’s abs! I loved the college setting, too. It was like if Buffy were in college with Xander and Willow, but instead of vampires it was a unique spirit type of world!

Brenna was an awesome MC. She was funny and sarcastic and not annoying! Can I just also say that my favorite character was Damon! I want to keep him in my pocket and carry him around with me along with his awesome personality!

Loved the descriptions, the world, and the writing! I love things that are dark, feel real, and still have a bit of humor and that’s exactly what this book is! I need to know what happens next and I can’t wait to read book two!!

Goodreads Summary:

Lipamorph is the drug that lets you sculpt yourself. It’s how all the female celebrities in the mid-2010s managed to have such large butts while keeping the rest of their bodies thin. Now, Lipamorph has finally been legalized and released to the masses.
24-year-old Amber Stiles–a loud, passionate feminist stuck working in tech support–thinks it’s disgusting: another company trying to sell women an idealized body as determined by men. Especially now that her younger sister, Judie, has become hopelessly addicted to it.
As more and more women indulge in the drug, both taking control of their own bodies, and raising the standard for “beautiful,” Amber’s dissenting voice seems to matter less and less.
Especially since her new girlfriend, Kelly, is a whole new standard of beauty all on her own.

My Review:

What I really liked about Sculpt Yourself was how unique it was, like it’s sort of a thinking novel in a sense. I feel as each year passes by, our society becomes more and more consumed by beauty. What’s the next step? How can I alter myself  more to reflect the perfect version of myself?

giphy

Whatever happened to being happy with the way your are and accept yourself for your flaws? Makeup is great. I love fun eye shadow, but now, even with makeup, it’s gooped and plopped on with so much foundation. In this Texas heat it would melt right off! Plastic surgery? That’s where things have gone too far, and it’s not hard to believe that something like this could happen one day.

Sculpt Yourself has a great cast of characters. It was character driven and they felt real, like people I could know in real life. They all had their flaws, as we all do. Because no one is perfect and no one can be. Whoever came up with the idea of perfect is a moron. Besides thinking about things, there was a twist along the way that was nice! I kind of wished the book had been written in third person since it had three main POVs, but that’s not a big deal. Overall, this book had great diversity, writing, snarkiness, emotion, and all kinds of things to think about, even after finishing! This is the second book I’ve read by the author that needs to be made into a movie!

From #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a new story in her Wicked series…

She’s everything he wants….

Cold. Heartless. Deadly. Whispers of his name alone bring fear to fae and mortals alike. The Prince. There is nothing in the mortal world more dangerous than him. Haunted by a past he couldn’t control, all Caden desires is revenge against those who’d wronged him, trapping him in never-ending nightmare. And there is one person he knows can help him.

She’s everything he can’t have…

Raised within the Order, Brighton Jussier knows just how dangerous the Prince is, reformed or not. She’d seen firsthand what atrocities he could be capable of. The last thing she wants to do is help him, but he leaves her little choice. Forced to work alongside him, she begins to see the man under the bitter ice. Yearning for him feels like the definition of insanity, but there’s no denying the heat in his touch and the wicked promise is his stare.

She’s everything he’ll take….

But there’s someone out there who wants to return the Prince to his former self. A walking, breathing nightmare that is hell bent on destroying the world and everyone close to him. The last thing either of them needs is a distraction, but with the attraction growing between them each now, the one thing he wants more than anything may be the one thing that will be his undoing.

She’s everything he’d die for….

Excerpt:

My entire body jerked at that comment, striking too close to home for comfort. “Let go of me.”

He held my gaze as he slowly lifted one finger after another, releasing my wrist. That bitter knot was back in my throat. The Prince had let go and his heavy lashes lowered, shielding his powerful gaze, but I swore I could still feel it. “My apologies,” he murmured. “That was uncalled for.”

A feather could’ve knocked me over right then. He was apologizing? The Prince? “Yeah, it was.” I swallowed hard, taking a step back from him.

“Even if it is true,” he added.

“Wow. Way to ruin an apology,” I muttered. “Not that you probably even know why you just apologized.”

“I do. It hurt you. Those words.”

“What? You can smell that, too?”

Those heavy lashes lifted, and the intensity of his gaze pierced me. Suddenly I thought back to the day I woke up in the hospital, to those eyes. “I can sense many things.”

Oh.

Oooh.

I had the distinct impression that he was talking about earlier, when I was thinking about the dream I had. And boy, didn’t that make me want to crawl up in a hole somewhere. At that moment, I made a mental note to legit not feel anything when I was around him or any other fae.

One eyebrow, several shades darker than his golden hair, lifted.

“Wait. Can you guys read minds?” I asked, voice hushed and thinking I didn’t know nearly as much about the fae as I thought I did.

“We don’t need to.”

Relief hit me, but it quickly faded when his words cycled back through my head. We don’t need to. Meaning picking up on our emotions probably gave them enough insight on what our thoughts were.

Nice.

“Well…” I held the folder closer to my chest. “That’s freaky.”

His lips twitched.

“And I need to go.” I started to turn once more, ordering myself not to run out of the lobby like it was on fire. But I stopped, facing him again. “I do care about these younglings. I will find them or I will find out what happened to them.”

The Prince inclined his head. A moment passed and then he nodded. Thinking this super awkward face to face was now, thankfully, over, I started to turn away again.

“Brighton?”

Desperately ignoring how the way he said my name made me think of stormy summer nights, I faced him, even though common sense screamed that I shouldn’t. I just couldn’t help myself. It wasn’t a compulsion. It was apparently really bad self-control. My wry gaze flickered over his face, and I bit back a sigh. He was the strongest, the deadliest of his kind, and that knowledge did nothing to dampen my appreciation of his masculine beauty.

“The red hair was a nice touch, but I prefer it this way.”

And then with those parting words, he turned and stalked off, leaving me standing there knowing one thing only.

The Prince knew it was me Saturday night.

My Review:

I’ve read pretty much all of Armentrout’s books, and this novella did not let me down! The Wicked series has been an awesome ride, so I was pretty ecstatic to see the Prince was getting a novella along with Brighton.

The Prince is a unique character that we learn more about as you get into the novella. As for Brighton, I loved her! Plus, we get more of Tink and his awesomeness. What I liked about this novella was it wasn’t just about a romance. It had a great story and a bond that slowly progresses!

Jennifer has created a unique spin on the fae, and I always love her writing and characters! I will say from the ending, is there more? There’s more, right? Highly recommend this one!

Glass Butterfly front

For close to a decade, twenty-five-year-old Felicity Lonsdale has masqueraded as a dowager almost twice her age—selling caterpillars to butterfly consortiums—enabling her to hide an ill-fated past while raising her late brother’s daughters. Together, the three live on an isolated Irish estate bequeathed by a dying earl. When the earl’s estranged son arrives to claim his inheritance by threatening to expose Felicity’s true identity, she longs to pack up her nieces and run. But a ghostly secret within the castle’s turret holds her captive.

Nick Thornton—a Roma viscount’s heir—is also captive. After a tryst with an investor’s wife nearly destroyed his family’s holiday resort, Nick forsook everything to elope with her. However, a tragic mistake at his hand led to her and his baby’s deaths. Refusing to turn to the family he shamed, Nick travels to seek the countess who once co-wrote a romance with his sister. There’s rumor of a special butterfly in her keep—a transparent-winged species with ties to the afterlife. Nick hopes to contact his dead wife and child, for only their forgiveness can free him.

Upon his arrival to Felicity’s estate, Nick offers to help her defeat the earl’s son, on the condition she allow Nick to investigate her glass butterflies. Felicity agrees, though fears the closer he gets to the ghosts of his past, the closer he’ll come to uncovering her own. As Nick spends time with Felicity and her nieces, he realizes the mystery enshrouding this fragile countess and her castle is more intriguing than the ghosts he originally came to find. And perhaps putting his dead to rest and helping her do the same will be his true path to redemption.

My Review:

This was such a beautiful story! I just knew I would like this one as much as the other two! It feels good to be proved right! And my poor babies, Nick and Felicity!!!

“We are two broken pieces. Perhaps together, we can find a fit.”

The chemistry between the MC’s was perfect, and there’s still a gothic vibe and a cool mystery to uncover! Plus, butterflies!!! I wanted to hug Nick and tell Felicity it’s okay! They had both been through so much at a young age, and it’s so hard not to feel for them. Sometimes the main person that’s standing in our way is ourselves, and we have to realize that we can knock those walls down so we can pull ourselves through! The story was perfect!

A.G. has such gorgeous writing, and the descriptions were elegant and breathtaking. The characters felt real, and the side characters were great! All I’m going to say is that I have to know Emilia’s story now! I can tell it’s going to be amazing!

Set 19 years after The Architect of Song:

Shortly after escaping a circus tragedy, young Italian orphan, Willow Antoniette, seeks refuge at The Manor of Diversions—a holiday resort in England born of a ghost story. For eleven years, she’s raised alongside the children of the resort’s owners: Julian, his twin brother, Nick, and their younger sister Emilia. Now that Willow is of marriable age, she’s determined to escape finishing school along with everyone’s efforts to make her a proper lady. The only man she wants to spend her life with is Julian, after all. Yet how can she tell him, when he thinks of her as nothing but a friend?

As a machinist and engineer, Julian Thornton prefers a governable life. He can’t allow his ever-deepening attraction for Willow to distract from his amusement park plans to lure a younger, wealthier clientele to their family’s resort. In hopes to escape Willow and find investors, Julian sets off on a transatlantic ocean liner headed for the St. Louis World’s Fair, unaware Willow has secretly stowed away on the same ship.

A tiny, mute orphan named Newton and a pair of haunted Italian shoes bring Willow and Julian face to face on deck. Forced to work together to solve the mystery of Newton and his vindictive, ghostly companion, Julian and Willow can no longer fight their untapped passions. However, time to admit their true feelings is running out, for the ghost and her murderer have enlisted them as unsuspecting pawns in a karmic game of cat-and-mouse that could cost all of them their lives.

A lady imprisoned by deafness, an architect imprisoned by his past, and a ghost imprisoned within the petals of a flower – intertwine in this love story that transcends life and death.

For most of her life, nineteen-year-old Juliet Emerline has subsisted – isolated by deafness – making hats in the solitude of her home. Now, she’s at risk to lose her sanctuary to Lord Nicolas Thornton, a twenty-seven-year-old mysterious and eccentric architect with designs on her humble estate. When she secretly witnesses him raging beside a grave, Juliet investigates, finding the name “Hawk” on the headstone and an unusual flower at the base. The moment Juliet touches the petals, a young English nobleman appears in ghostly form, singing a song only her deaf ears can hear. The ghost remembers nothing of his identity or death, other than the one name that haunts his afterlife: Thornton.

To avenge her ghostly companion and save her estate, Juliet pushes aside her fear of society and travels to Lord Thornton’s secluded holiday resort, posing as a hat maker in one of his boutiques. There, she finds herself questioning who to trust: the architect of flesh and bones who can relate to her through romantic gestures, heartfelt notes, and sensual touches … or the specter who serenades her with beautiful songs and ardent words, touching her mind and soul like no other man ever can. As sinister truths behind Lord Thornton’s interest in her estate and his tie to Hawk come to light, Juliet is lured into a web of secrets. But it’s too late for escape, and the tragic love taking seed in her heart will alter her silent world forever.

International and NYT bestselling author, A.G. Howard, brings her darkly magical and visual/visceral storytelling to Victorian England. The Architect of Song is the first installment in her lush and romantic Haunted Hearts Legacy series, a four book gothic saga following the generations of one family as – haunted by both literal and figurative ghosts – they search for self-acceptance, love, and happiness.

New Adult: Recommended for ages 17+.

About A.G. Howard

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would’ve happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she’s not writing, A.G.’s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.
