About the book:

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and bringing Emory back she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows.

My Review:

From the very first page, Mallory McCartney throws us into an action and fast paced plot. You learn about the different characters right away, since the chapters are told in multiple view points. At first, I was a little confused, but after a few chapters, I was sucked right in. Brokk, being my favorite, could turn into a wolf! He had me at wolf!

The character were all interesting, and I loved seeing how they were all connected. There is magic, betrayal and mayhem, all spiraled, blended and twisted in a new type of fantasy world. The writing was addicting, and the end had me wanting more.

Understudies never get to perform

. . . which is why being Juliet’s understudy in the school’s yearly “Evening with Shakespeare” is the perfect role for Emily. She can earn some much-needed extra credit while pursuing her main goal of spending time with Wes, aka Romeo, aka the hottest, nicest guy in school (in her completely unbiased opinion). And she meant to learn her lines, really, it’s just:

  1. a) Shakespeare is HARD,
  2. b) Amanda, aka the “real” Juliet, makes her run errands instead of lines, and
  3. c) there’s no point because Amanda would never miss the chance to be the star of the show.

Then, Amanda ends up in the hospital and Emily, as the (completely unprepared!) understudy, has to star opposite the guy of her dreams. Oops?

My Review:

Emily has had a crush on Wes forever, and when she finds out he is newly single, she wants to try and win him over.

I loved this book! It had a lot of corny and over the top moments that were awesome! I am a hard person to make laugh, and I found myself laughing at several parts throughout the book.

I’m not going to lie here; I was probably a bit over the top with crushes that I had back in high school, too, and I remember me and my friends talking about boys similar to these girls. I felt connected to this book! Em was funny and Wes was incredibly sweet!

The Shakespeare scenes with Em were greattttttttttttt! I even felt stressed when Em was feeling stressed. When a writer has me matching the emotions that the character is feeling, then I have found a winner! This was a cute and light read that I would recommend to anyone, especially those that had a long time crush and were afraid to tell the guy!
