My Review:

I love, love, love Guillermo del Toro. He always has such amazing character makeup in his movies. What I loved was this film was like Amelie meets Creature From the Black Lagoon.

The stand out character for me was Octavia Spencer, but she is always awesome! Sally Hawkins was great as the mute Elisa. Doug Jones was great with his quirky movements—Pan’s Labyrinth was my favorite of his. Richard Jenkins’s character was one to feel for, and Michael Shannon was “insane” as usual.

The highlight of the movie was the romantic aspect because this isn’t Beauty and the Beast where you get a beast transforming into a prince. You get a freaking creature here, and I loved it! The musical score had a very artsy/French style to it that made the movie stand out more.

Bravo to del Toro who can go from Horror (Mimic), to comic book (Hellboy), to fantastical (Pan’s Labyrinth), to action (Pacific Rim), to Gothic atmosphere (Crimson Peek), to artsy/romantic (THIS MOVIE)!
