But sometimes, inhabitants of the dark arrive with the desire to disturb proceedings. Dark Celebrations is a collection of twelve short stories. And the holidays will never be the same.

My Review:

This was a great collection and I loved that I could read through each story quickly! My favorite would have to either be Prom Screams or Trick or Death! There was true imagination that went into these stories and the writing, along with the dialogue, was excellent!! Wonderful and horrific descriptions! My favorite kinds of things!

My Review:

I’ve really enjoyed this series with two guys’ stories down and two more to go! So to be able to read a collection of short stories on each of the wolves was quite the delight! Lucas, Dom, Finn, Tristan—my boys!

I liked all the the stories, but I think Dom’s was the best—I loved getting a glimpse at little five-year-old Dom! Also, there are scenes between him and Lucas that were awesome with all their bickering! Tristan’s was so good too, packed with emotion, and an awesome conclusion! Finn’s had one of the best action sequences, and Lucas is one of my favorites so of course his was awesome!

Even though these are short, they are filled with backstory, emotion, and awesomeness! Can’t wait to read rest of the stories on them!

Review: The Poison Eaters and Other Stories

Title: The Poison Eaters and Other Stories

Author: Holly Black

Date of Publication: April 1st, 2010

image1 (1)

Goodreads Summary:

Pick your poison: Vampires, devils, werewolves, faeries, or . . . ? Find them all here in Holly Black’s amazing first collection.

In her debut collection, New York Times best-selling author Holly Black returns to the world of Tithe in two darkly exquisite new tales. Then Black takes readers on a tour of a faerie market and introduces a girl poisonous to the touch and another who challenges the devil to a competitive eating match. Some of these stories have been published in anthologies such as 21 Proms, The Faery Reel, and The Restless Dead, and many have been reprinted in many “Best of ” anthologies.

The Poison Eaters is Holly Black’s much-anticipated first collection, and her ability to stare into the void—and to find humanity and humor there—will speak to young adult and adult readers alike.

My Review:

I’m not the biggest short story collection fan! I can maybe name less than five collections on the top of my hand that I really enjoyed.  This one was decent. I loved some and thought some of the others were okay. I definitely prefer Black’s novels so much more!

Let me start by saying my fave was the one that featured the character’s from Tithe! I could read about those characters for the rest of my life! All of the stories had fabulous writing and original character qualities. However, a few of the stories I just wanted more oomph from. But I definitely recommend it if you love Holly Black!

Review: The Sea Was a Fair Master

Title: The Sea Was a Fair Master

Author: Calvin Demmer

Date of Publication: June 5th, 2018

40033777

Summary:

The world’s fate lies with a comatose young girl; an android wants to remember a human she once knew under Martian skies; men at sea learn that the ocean is a realm far different from land, where an unforgiving god rules; a school security guard discovers extreme English class; and a man understands what the behemoth beneath the sea commands of him.

The Sea Was a Fair Master is a collection of 23 stories, riding the currents of fantasy, science fiction, crime, and horror. There are tales of murder, death, loss, revenge, greed, and hate. There are also tales of hope, survival, and love.

For the sea was a fair master.

My Review:

I normally am not a big fan of reading anthologies with short stories when they are by different authors because my level of liking the stories fluctuates. However, I have read several stories by Demmer and was excited to see there would be an anthology with only his written words.

Calvin Demmer is like the king of horror short stories! Anyway, this was a cool ride through tales with dark stuff, fun stuff and all around cool stuff! Gritty and dark while also being thought provoking! His writing is able to sweep me up and suck me right in. Can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve next!
