Review: The Unfortunates

Title: The Unfortunates

Author: Kim Liggett

Publication Date: July 10th, 2018

5D6E24B2-2007-4EAA-B5A9-FBB60E81EACE

Goodreads Summary:

When seventeen-year-old senator’s son Grant Tavish is involved in a fatal accident, all he wants to do is face the consequences of what he’s done, but the consequences never come, even if headlines of “affluenza” do. The truth soon becomes clear: Due to his father’s connections, not only will Grant not be held accountable for his actions, he’s going to get away with murder.

When a long Tavish tradition approaches, a cave excursion on the Appalachian trail, Grant seizes the opportunity to take justice into his own hands by staging an accident and never coming back. But before he has a chance to enact his plans, the cave system collapses, trapping him miles beneath the surface with four other teens from much less fortunate circumstances. As they struggle to survive, they share their innermost secrets and fears, and just when it seems they might be on track to finding a way out, they realize there’s something else down there.

And it’s hunting them.

My review:

This is the second book I’ve read by Liggett and I absolutely loved it!

Grant is in a crappy position because of choices that were made even though the outcome was accidental. It’s tough to decide how a person should feel about situations like these. From a mother of the victims, I’d be livid. From an outside POV, I feel bad for both parties. But I did seriously feel sorry for Grant and I really liked him.

Now let’s get to the cave parts. Holy claustrophobia! Please remind me to never ever go to a cave without a guide! The world building and the horror stuff was awesome!

The writing and dialogue were great and I’ll read anything from this woman! My only issue was the cover was sort of an odd choice. I think maybe something with a cave would have worked better.

My Review:

I’ve been waiting forever for this sequel. Literally, FOREVER! I’ll just start off by saying that, yes, it was just as good as book one!

I liked Lana because she wasn’t a cry baby! Tough things happened to her and she moved on, didn’t wallow in the pity! Also, there’s a road trip of sorts and those are one of my absolute favorite things! Then let’s put Alexander in the picture, and it’s heck yeah from there!

I loved Alexander! Loved learning more about him, his past, and how he developed as a character along with Lana. And the swoon was soooooo good! There’s some mystery, suspense, and action all intertwined in this fun sequel! Also, there’s a certain character here that I would like a book about!

Goodreads Summary:

Cassandra DiCavalier thinks she has her life sorted out, when Damon Voight storms back in. Sexy and overprotective, yet with a soft side, this ex-military guy is every girl’s fantasy.

She already had the fantasy – ten years ago – and is not about to fall into the same trap. But despite her best efforts to keep the charming soldier at bay, she seems to be meeting him time and time again.

Cassandra is one tough cookie, and Damon is as stubborn as they come. Will they be able to find their love once again?

My Review:

This is the first book I’ve read by Alexa where no magic was involved, and I love me some of that, but this one had a magic all its own! Cassandra and Damon were freaking awesome and I always love past loves reuniting! There was great banter and swoon between the leads! Also lets not forget the suspense! And I couldn’t put this one down!

Cassandra was a great MC and not annoying! As you know, I get annoyed easily with female MCs but not here! All I can say about Damon is Alexa knows how to write guy characters! Can I just add that Renzo was an excellent side character as well!

I’d actually like to read more contemporary sort of books from the author! Blood Ties was well written and the characters were relatable!! Plus, there was also some pretty emotional spots! Loved it!

Blood Ties, Love Binds

A standalone romance suspense

First love never dies… And neither does revenge.

Cassandra

Of all the things that could go wrong, he had to come back! Ten years ago he leaves me with a broken heart, and now he’s acting like he cares. And let’s not forget how infuriatingly macho he’s become. Damon may think he can boss me around, but he’s got another thing coming. I’m no longer the starry-eyed girl he knew.

Damon

Leaving her was the worst decision I’ve ever made, but I thought it was for the best. I was listening to her father, after all. And now I’m back because of him – and his shady side-dealings. Cassandra thinks she’s got it all figured out, but she doesn’t even know the half of it. With my connections, I know I can keep her safe. If only she’d stop trying to kung fu my ass, maybe we’d get somewhere.

They say opposites attract, but these two will have sparks flying with every page. Hop on a thrilling tale of love, hate, and everything in between as Damon tries to save Cassandra from a heritage that could cost her life – and his.

Excerpt:

Damon watched in slight satisfaction as realization dawned on Cass. Playing the dashing stranger had its appeal, but nothing compared to the recognition drifting in her eyes, even as her lips parted in surprise.

His delight turned to growing frustration when it seemed like she would bolt any minute. He understood the knee-jerk reaction, especially considering their history, but before he could speak Cassandra drew her hand back and slapped him.

Damon stood still for a moment, processing the hit. Her hazel eyes sparked outrage, and a delightful flush stained her cheeks. He forced himself to look past that. “What was that for?”
It was the wrong question to ask, judging by the way she clenched her jaw. When she spoke, Cassandra’s voice was tight with reined-in emotion. “You dare ask me that, after ten years? Ten freaking years!”
“Cassie, I –” Damon tried to take a step closer, but Cassandra moved back, holding her palms up.
(…)
Viktor will pay for this, one way or another.

Damon met Cassandra’s gaze once more, and held it. Something in her expression shifted, but she wasn’t running away. Yet. He pounced on the chance while he still could. “That’s not the full story, actually it’s not even a story. I left, yes, but not for the reasons you think.”
“Sure you did.” Cassandra’s eyes shifted from his, avoiding the truth.
Before she could stop him, Damon reached for her chin and forced her to look him at him. “You used to be able to tell when I was lying. Tell me, am I now?”
Flashes of the girl he’d known crossed her expression, though Cassandra did a good job trying to hide it. He could still see the girl he’d helped out with homework, the tougher yet vulnerable side of her he’d fallen in love with…
How can she think I’d leave her? It stung to think that all she recalled of him was his ambitious streak.
It took Damon a second to realize Cassandra had frozen at his touch, and the look in her eyes had changed. When he tuned in to the change in her, he picked up on her quicker breathing, nostrils flaring as if inhaling his scent. Up close, he could now smell the vanilla perfume emanating from her skin, and he wanted nothing more than to sample her lips.
Cassandra’s eyes widened, the anger set aside by the pure chemical reaction they had to one another. The blazing glare, so eager to put him in his place, dimmed now to a sense of assessment.
Damon had been used to girls throwing themselves at him in the military, but he’d never been interested in more than a night. Only one woman had occupied his thoughts, and she was now so close every instinct in him screamed to make her his.
My little spitfire.

Review: The Quality of Silence

Title: The Quality of Silence

Author: Rosamund Lupton

Date of Publication: February 16th, 2016

quality

ABOUT THE QUALITY OF SILENCE

The gripping, moving story of a mother and daughter’s quest to uncover a dark secret in the Alaskan wilderness, from the New York Timesbestselling author of Sister and Afterwards

Thrillingly suspenseful and atmospheric, The Quality of Silence is the story of Yasmin, a beautiful astrophysicist, and her precocious deaf daughter, Ruby, who arrive in a remote part of Alaska to be told that Ruby’s father, Matt, has been the victim of a catastrophic accident. Unable to accept his death as truth, Yasmin and Ruby set out into the hostile winter of the Alaskan tundra in search of answers. But as a storm closes in, Yasmin realizes that a very human danger may be keeping pace with them. And with no one else on the road to help, they must keep moving, alone and terrified, through an endless Alaskan night.

My Review:

I found the writing in this one well done, and the mystery aspect kept me engrossed throughout the book. Some parts were a little slow moving, but I really liked Ruby.

What pulled me in the most was the cover because I don’t normally read mystery type books, but I really loved the Alaska setting! I don’t want to say too much since it is a mystery book, so I feel like a lot will give it away!

Review: Shutter

Title: Shutter

Author:Laurie Faria Stolarz

Date of Publication: October 18th, 2016

Shutter

Goodreads Summary:

THE FACTS
• Julian Roman, age sixteen, is an escapee from the Fairmount County Juvenile Detention Facility.
• His parents, Michael Roman and Jennifer Roman, are dead.
• Julian is wanted for murder.

THE QUESTIONS
• Why is Julian Roman on the run?
• Just how dangerous is he?
• And who did kill Michael and Jennifer Roman, if not Julian?

Seventeen-year-old Day Baker views life through the lens of her camera, where perspective is everything. But photographs never tell the whole story. After Day crosses paths with Julian, the world she pictures and the truths she believes-neatly captured in black and white-begin to blur.

Julian is not the “armed and dangerous” escapee the police are searching for, but his alibis don’t quite add up, either. There is more to his story. This time, Day is determined to see the entire picture . . . whatever it reveals. Did he? Or didn’t he?

Day digs deeper into the case while Julian remains on the run. But the longer her list of facts becomes, the longer the list of questions becomes, too. It’s also getting harder to deny the chemistry she feels for him. Is it real? Or is she being manipulated?

Day is close to finding the crack in the case. She just needs time to focus before the shutter snaps shut.

Laurie Faria Stolarz is a master of suspense and romance. In this page-turning thriller, Stolarz tackles dark truths with a powerful, contemporary voice. Shutter will keep readers guessing until the very end.

My Review:

I normally don’t read a lot of mystery and suspense novels. I think the last time was way back in junior high when I read Lois Duncan and Joan Lowery Nixon books.

Day loves to take pictures, and when she runs into Julian by accident in a convenience store and not recognizing him at first as the boy on the run from the cops and wanted back into custody for murder, she follows him without him knowing anyway to get the perfect picture.

Later on she runs into him again and decides to help him and hides him outside in the shed. She believes he didn’t do the crime that he is accused of, but the stuff he says doesn’t add up either.

I really liked the characters in this book even though Day did a lot of things that didn’t make sense like sit here and hide a guy she doesn’t know accused of murder.  I mean it wasn’t like she was even friends with him before, so the situation was weird.

The mystery part was actually pretty good because I did keep going back and fourth with what the outcome could be and even though it was predictable it was a very entertaining read.  I would recommend this one.
