Kell – once assumed to be the last surviving Antari – begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. And in the wake of tragedy, can Arnes survive?

WHO WILL RISE?
Lila Bard, once a commonplace – but never common – thief, has survived and flourished through a series of magical trials. But now she must learn to control the magic, before it bleeds her dry. Meanwhile, the disgraced Captain Alucard Emery of the Night Spire collects his crew, attempting a race against time to acquire the impossible.

WHO WILL TAKE CONTROL?
And an ancient enemy returns to claim a crown while a fallen hero tries to save a world in decay.

My Review:

I feel like I have been fiddling around with this book forever! I really really loved book one, but I feel like both these other books didn’t live up to that first book. This book, however, was still pretty cool, though!

My thing was that I don’t mind multiple POV’s, but there were just too many here, and sometimes it would take a while to get back to the one that I wanted. I also felt the book could have been cut down because it was really long which is fine because ACOWAR was long, but it was a bit much here.

Romances however were on point! Kell and Lila I love love love! Magic was awesome as it always is. Rhy and Alucard… Yes!!!!!!!

Overall a unique series, but I still love Schwab’s This Savage Song so much more. That book owns my heart!

Review: A Gathering of Shadows

Title: A Gathering of Shadows

Author: V.E. Schwab

Date of Publication: February 23rd, 2016

a gathering

Goodreads Summary:

It has been four months since a mysterious obsidian stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Prince Rhy was wounded, and since the nefarious Dane twins of White London fell, and four months since the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift–back into Black London.

Now, restless after having given up his smuggling habit, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks as she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games–an extravagant international competition of magic meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries–a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

And while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night will reappear in the morning. But the balance of magic is ever perilous, and for one city to flourish, another London must fall.

My Review:

Absolutely loved book one. This one wasn’t as great as the first book in my opinion, but still good. I felt Kell and Lila were separated way too long in this book. Also, I wasn’t a big fan of the White London chapters.

This book was full of action, and definitely two big swoony moments. Lila was pretty awesome in this book. Her character is strong, and I feel like she is growing with each book. There was a new character named Alucard, and I loved him!!!!!

Kell was pretty sulky in this book, but that is just his character. I felt the King and Queen treated him poorly. I understand their son is connected to Rhy, but he saved his life! Now. The end! What was that????? I am starting book three ASAP.

April Reads 2017

This month I have a lot going on since I am going to be releasing a book in May, and am editing another book that I will be releasing this summer. So, my only for sure read at the moment is A Gathering of Shadows by: V.E. Schwab. I loved the first book! I know I am late to the game in this series. I know I will have other ARCs to read, but I am going to be a little more picky this month.

Review: A Darker Shade of Magic

Title: A Darker Shade of Magic

Author: V.E. Schwab

Date of Publication: February 24th, 2015

a darker

Goodreads Summary:

Kell is one of the last travelers–magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city.

There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad King–George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered–and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London–a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

My Review:

I actually did not finish the book the first time I tried to read it a long time ago, but to be fair, I didn’t make it that far to begin with. I was confused, and my mind may have not been in the right place. I read This Savage Song not long ago and loved it, so I thought I would give this book one more shot, and I’m glad I took the chance!

After I got through the part about understanding that there are four different London’s, which are Black, Grey, White, and Red, I could focus on the characters. I loved Kell, and I loved Lila. Occasionally, there were other point of views sprinkled into the mix along with the two main characters.

MAGIC! There was a lot of magic going on, and it was awesome! Lila was probably my favorite character because even with the choices she makes, she still has a heart hidden inside her chest. Her personality rocked!

This book was just all kinds of awesome, and while it didn’t end on a cliffhanger, it left me with enough where I can’t wait to read the next book. Loved it!

Review: This Savage Song

Title: This Savage Song

Author: Victoria Schwab

Publication Date: June 7th, 2016

16122541_159468611216332_8400241597526048768_n

Goodreads Summary:

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

My Review:

I have had this one for a while and finally had a chance to read it, and I wish that I would have read it a lot earlier! First, I loved the whole monster aspect because I like most things that have to do with monsters. Second, I loved both of the main characters to pieces! They both had a lot going on inside of themselves that they had to deal with.

“One moment I didn’t exist and the next I did, and I spend every day scared I’ll just stop being again, and every time I slip, every time I go dark, it’s harder to come back. It’s all I can do to stay where I am. Who I am.”

Kate has made life a problem because her Dad won’t let her come home until she finally gives him a reason for her to come home. Kate’s dad is aligned with some of the monsters in the city, and she wants to do anything that she can to impress him.

August is a monster and doesn’t want to be one. There have been a couple of times when he has let the monster come all the way out and vows to not let that happen again. I loved his struggle, and he was my favorite character!

Loved the bond between August and Kate. There wasn’t romance in this book. Yet. But, I hope there will be in the next because I loved these two! I wasn’t surprised by some of the twists, but there was one I didn’t guess. And that ending!!!!!!
