Goodreads Summary:

A new adventure about a girl who is fated to wash the bodies of the dead in this companion to Furthermore.

Our story begins on a frosty night…

Laylee can barely remember the happier times before her beloved mother died. Before her father, driven by grief, lost his wits (and his way). Before she was left as the sole remaining mordeshoor in the village of Whichwood, destined to spend her days washing the bodies of the dead and preparing their souls for the afterlife. It’s become easy to forget and easier still to ignore the way her hands are stiffening and turning silver, just like her hair, and her own ever-increasing loneliness and fear.

But soon, a pair of familiar strangers appears, and Laylee’s world is turned upside down as she rediscovers color, magic, and the healing power of friendship.

My Review:

So, for the most part I loathe middle grade books. I find them not gritty enough. I don’t mind younger children picture books though, and of course YA, but there is just something about middle grade that is a big NO! However, I loved Mafi’s other book Furthermore which was middle grade. I just have to say Shatter Me is my favorite series ever.

Anyway, I know people have said this book is dark, but I feel it’s perfect for the junior high age. What I really liked here was Mafi’s fantastic writing and originality. I mean, a girl that washes dead corpses for a living? Amazing!

Laylee has had a rough life, and I think it was great to depict that because there are so many kids out there that don’t have a perfect upbringing who may relate to Laylee. Mafi also brings back Alice and Oliver from Furthermore, and dear God please let Mafi write a YA book or NA book on these characters grown up.

The book has more like a narration vibe, so if you don’t like that, you may not like this duology. But I was simply captivated by the world!
